When Netflix first captivated audiences with its gripping psychological thriller The Beast in Me, viewers were pulled into a masterclass of tension, anchored by an Emmy-winning powerhouse performance that left critics and fans alike convinced the story had reached its definitive, tightly wrapped conclusion. But prestige dramas rarely stay contained for long, and following an awards-season sweep that proved the project's lasting cultural footprint, the creative team is officially cracking open a brand-new chapter.

Continuing that momentum, Netflix has just dropped major casting news for the sophomore run, confirming that legendary screen icon John Goodman is officially boarding the hit series for season 2.

The Beast in Me season 2 adds John Goodman

Variety reports that television icon John Goodman is officially boarding the sophomore run of Netflix's acclaimed drama The Beast in Me, stepping in as Jack - the father of returning lead character Aggie Wiggs, played by Claire Danes. While specific narrative arcs for the upcoming episodes remain heavily guarded, the casting marks a major new addition to the creative landscape following the show's renewal announcement this past September.

Goodman brings a storied career to the ensemble, boasting eleven Emmy nominations - most notably seven for his defining run on Roseanne alongside a 2007 guest win for Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. His recent television footprint includes long-running work on The Conners and HBO's The Righteous Gemstones, while his legendary cinematic resume features recurring collaborations with the Coen brothers in classics like The Big Lebowski and Barton Fink, as well as standout turns in Argo and Flight.

The project's transition into a multi-season run mirrors the path blazed by previous hits like Big Little Lies, pivoting away from its original single-season designation after a writers' room opened earlier this year, per Variety. This shift comes on the heels of a dominant awards season showing; originally packaged and campaigned as a limited series, the project cleaned up at the recent Emmy Awards. Matthew Rhys secured the trophy for lead actor in a limited or anthology series for his season 1 performance, alongside a win for original dramatic score.

A slight change in the creative top brass

Original series architect Howard Gordon is stepping up to co-helm the sophomore run alongside Daniel Pearle, who served as an executive producer during The Beast in Me season 1.
