And when Joe Wright’s name is attached to a title, it automatically transcends into the realm of a classic saga. However, another of his most celebrated works, which was being streamed on Netflix for quite some time, is now set to leave soon.

Soon, the 2007 epic film starring James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan, and Benedict Cumberbatch, Atonement, will no longer be available on Netflix. The movie earned an Academy Award and was a commercial and critical triumph when it was first released. The last day to watch the romantic war tragedy is August 1, 2026. 

Atonement is written by Christopher Hampton, who adapted it from Ian McEwan's 2001 book of the same name. The movie centers on the love story of McAvoy’s Robbie Turner and Kightley’s Cecilia Tallis.

Their story is marred by a crime and its decades-long repercussions that ultimately doom their romance. In the movie, Cumberbatch portrays Paul Marshall, Ronan plays Briony Tallis, and Brenda Blethyn plays Grace Turner. Juno Temple plays Lola Quincey, Patrick Kennedy plays Leon Tallis, and Daniel Mays plays Tommy Nettle.

The movie was a phenomenal success both commercially and critically upon its release.

On August 29, 2007, Atonement made its global premiere at the 64th Venice International Film Festival. It was then released on September 7, 2007, in the UK, and December 14, 2007, in the US. According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned over $129 million worldwide on a mere $30 million budget and has an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Atonement was nominated seven times for the 80th Academy Awards, including once for Best Picture. Anyhow, only Dario Marianelli's work in the film was awarded the Oscar for Best Original Score. While this masterpiece is about to leave Netflix, many others are making their way to the platform.
