She explained that although the characters live in politically refined worlds, their wardrobes reveal their inner turmoil; conscious sartorial selection as emotional protection and projection. She employed the deliberate and situational use of fabric in the show, suggesting, there is a lot "a tie can say about a man."

If a character felt vulnerable, Gering overdressed in terms of texture and weight, implying an armor of defense mechanisms, per the outlet. Similarly, for untrustworthy characters, her choice "would use a less tactile fabric" to provide a "sneaky or slick vibe." Gering discussed her fittings with Keri Russell (Kate Wyler) and Rufus Sewell (Hal Wyler). Wyler's Second Lady-look used more expensive fabrics, a "quiet luxury" palette, and elegant silhouettes, replacing jagged lines. Sewell's Vice President-wardrobe became more formal with high-end blue fabrics, designed to be authoritative yet intimate, to highlight what is to come in Season 3.
