Amid nonstop chatter about what is new on Netflix, several rumors have been floating around on social media, with the latest focusing on a potential new category. Like every new year, the streamer will bring a fresh slate of movies, shows, and documentaries, but could there also be a new category?

Apart from the titles that are supposed to grace the screen this year accompanied by the giant red N, an alleged category by the name of Netflix After Dark has been making the rounds.

Rumors about a Netflix After Dark category have been circulating on social media, leaving many users confused about whether it is real. A verified account by the name of Hoops Crave on X tweeted that Netflix will be adding an adult content category next month onwards, making way for a barrage of discussion regarding the same.

Netflix, however, has not announced or even teased any such category. The platform’s content policies clearly state that it does not host explicit adult material, which puts the rumor to bed.

Netflix has introduced new categories before, but only within its existing content rules. In 2025, the streamer announced the Last Chance to Watch category to shed light on the titles nearing removal. Now, the streaming giant’s focus is on the latest movies and shows scheduled for release in 2026.

While not a category, Netflix is focused on a preview event this new year.

Netflix to bring back Next on Netflix with a twist

Formerly known as Next on Netflix, the streaming giant is back with its annual tradition featuring the upcoming movie and TV lineup.  But the event has been rebranded as WHAT NEXT and officially kicks off on January 7, 2026. Confirmed release dates, first-look footage, and much more will be revealed during this event.

Netflix had confirmed the event on Christmas Day across its US and UK social accounts. The teaser featured flashes of major titles like Bridgerton, One Piece, WWE content, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. The 2026 edition is expected to be a mostly digital affair.

The streaming giant has not confirmed whether the focus will be limited to English-language titles or include international content, but more details of its lineup are expected to be revealed over multiple days.

While fans wait for the event, they can rest assured about the confusion created due to the Netflix After Dark rumor. Until Netflix says otherwise or changes its rules, this rumor is just talk.
