Remember the COVID-19 pandemic when the entire world was forced inside the four walls of their home - the very place that was once a sanctuary quickly became a holding cell. However, the feeling of constraint never transformed into doom, as there was always the safety blanket of "everything will be alright." But what if that knowledge was stripped away, and what is left is the feeling of dread that this may never end? The upcoming Netflix film, The Last House, takes this question and packages it into a riveting sci-fi mystery thriller.
However, the juxtaposition of the premise with a widely known and lived real-life scenario has led many to believe that the movie is based on a true story or might be an adaptation of a book. But is this assumption really true?

The Last House, an upcoming sci-fi thriller on Netflix, is based on an original high-concept script by Matthew Robinson rather than a book or true story. Some viewers online have mistakenly assumed it is adapted from a survival novel or a real-life lockdown event due to its grounded, claustrophobic premise reminiscent of other home-invasion or apocalyptic thrillers.
In an interview with Tudum published on June 15, 2026, director Louis Leterrier stated that he aimed for a sympathetic, tactile neighborhood feel by drawing aesthetic and tonal inspiration from vintage Amblin-style Steven Spielberg flicks rather than actual events or literature. Therefore, it can be said that some elements of the movie were indeed inspired, but not the whole movie and definitely not from any real events or a book.

The main characters of The Last House, previously titled 11817, are a family that is trapped within their house with no way out. As if that were not terrifying enough, they have limited supplies and must cooperate to survive not just a shortage of necessities but also the enigmatic, impending danger that is trapping them inside.
The high-concept original script is set to be backed by a stellar lineup of actors that further amps up the excitement for the film.
