Will Ferrell has completely embraced his athletic alter ego as golfer Lonnie Hawkins in Netflix's comedy series The Hawk. The actor has gone all in on becoming the washed-up golf legend in the series. While Lonnie's body may be telling him to quit, his heart and, even more so, his ego, still refuse to leave the course, and he gears up for one last shot at glory.

Now, with such a convincing backstory, it is no surprise that many are wondering whether The Hawk is based on a true story.

Is there any real story behind The Hawk?

Netflix's comedy series The Hawk is not based on a true story. While Lonnie Hawkins' journey feels real, the character is entirely fictional and does not exist in real life. The series was created by Will Ferrell, Harper Steele, and Chris Henchy.

Apart from Ferrell, Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Chris Parnell, and Katelyn Tarver also star in the series. Now, although Ferrell’s Lonnie is not real, he got a real big brand deal. The fictional golfer even got to star in the campaign for Kim Kardashian’s brand SKIMS.

SKIMS Men featured Will Ferrell's The Hawk character, Lonnie Hawkins, as the face of its latest Cotton Briefs campaign, making the golf legend a brand ambassador. Unsurprisingly, the campaign, shot by renowned photographer Nadia Lee Cohen and paired with Kim Kardashian's narration, made Lonnie feel even more like a real sports icon. Ferrell even earned the approval of his sons for the tongue-in-cheek campaign.

Much like the character, the series also relies on its carefully selected filming locations that make the story more believable.

What are the filming locations of The Hawk?

One of the primary filming locations for The Hawk was Los Angeles. The cast and crew also filmed at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast. Some of the scenic views were shot in this location. Lonnie Hawkins' fictional induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame was filmed at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

Several of Lonnie's most competitive golf sequences were shot in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The production also headed to Las Vegas, where Lonnie and his son share one of the series' crucial face-to-face moments. Although Lonnie Hawkins is not based on a real golfer, The Hawk does such a convincing job building his world that it is easy to believe he once dominated the course.
