For years, many viewers have claimed to have seen connections that prove Stranger Things has been based on The Montauk Project. With both touching on topics of mind control, time travel, and scientific experiments, there is no denying that the series has taken inspiration from the horrific American government conspiracy theory. After all, the Duffer brother's show was initially set to be titled Montauk before they settled on their present name.

While the connection seems to be clear as day with some of Eleven's experiments in the series being described in the books by Preston Nichols, it is not the only inspiration that the creators pulled from. They have also incorporated a ton of 80s nostalgia and memorabilia into the Netflix series and even took inspiration from the works of the king of horror, Stephen King, who seemed to love the show.

Just like many other conspiracy theories, The Montauk Project has alleged the existence of secret government programs that were conducted at Camp Hero. Although it has been a decommissioned military base for years, the theories surrounding it have never ceased. It was claimed that various human experiments were held at the base during the 1970s and 80s. However, no proof has existed except for witness recollections and written stories.

The experiments conducted there were said to be rather inhumane with monsters like the Demogorgon and more being created from the subconscious of one's mind. It was also claimed that the experiments had been conducted on young children, especially boys, to give them psychic abilities and teach them mind control. Although it might just be a theory, there is no doubt that it is a thing of nightmares.
