Amid this hectic routine, people’s love for period dramas has grown more than ever. After a long day, viewers often look to escape into another time and era, watching characters deal with the same emotional complexities of everyday life or face different challenges. One such show is The Crown, starring Olivia Colman and Josh O’Connor.

The two were brilliant playing Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles. Now, for those who enjoyed the political and personal conflicts of The Crown, there is another period drama featuring both Olivia Colman and Josh O’Connor that might steal hearts.

Mothering Sunday, starring Olivia Colman, follows the story of a maidservant, Jane Fairchild, who works for a wealthy family. As the title suggests, Jane gets a day off on Mothering Sunday, when she is invited by her lover, Paul Sheringham, who belongs to a wealthy family, to spend the day with him.

Unfortunately, this film, released in 2021, is not available on Netflix. However, fans can easily watch it on Hulu or rent the movie on Amazon. This can be a good watch for those missing The Crown

However, both shows are different, considering the film, Mothering Sunday, is fiction based on a novel by Graham Swift, The Crown follows the life and events of a real person. While Mothering Sunday focuses on the dynamic between upper-class families and their servants, The Crown shows the life of Queen Elizabeth II.

Both Mothering Sunday and The Crown are British period dramas set in the 20th century, giving viewers the same opportunity to time-travel. Now, the 2021 movie is also a bonus for fans of Olivia Colman, who plays the role of Queen in The Crown and Mrs. Clarrie Niven in Mothering Sunday.

The Oscar-winning actress has always shown an impressive performance, and the same can be said for these two projects. And she has been equally brilliant in another period drama.

Olivia Colman was impressive in Great Expectations

The BBC and FX adaptation of Great Expectations brought Charles Dickens’s 1861 novel back to the screen with Olivia Colman playing the role of Miss Havisham. As most are aware, the character Miss Havisham in the show lives surrounded by reminders of her past, having been abandoned on her wedding day years earlier.

She raises her ward, Estella, and encourages her emotional distance from others, particularly men. And Olivia Colman, who agreed to play the role of Queen in The Crown for an odd reason, is once again brilliant as she plays the role of Miss Havisham. She showed the character's isolation, bitterness, and control over those around her.

This is a must-watch for those who love period dramas and are a fan of Olivia Colman’s brilliant performance.
