With football fever at its peak, Netflix has announced that it is set to bring Peter Berg’s new film, The Mosquito Bowl, to its platform. If the first glimpse revealed by the streaming giant is any indication, the movie is set to be as intense and gritty as many of Berg’s other projects. The director is known for his ability to brilliantly present dramatized adaptations of real events, including Friday Night Lights and Deepwater Horizon.

Berg’s war film Lone Survivor was a massive hit and was a dramatized retelling of a true story. Now, the director is returning with another film set during World War II. This time, it seems he is once again looking to tell a long-forgotten story from the past.

The Mosquito Bowl tells a shocking story from the past

Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl is inspired by real events during the time of World War II. It is based on Pulitzer Prize winner Buzz Bissinger’s New York Times bestseller, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. And the book was inspired by a real-life football game played on Christmas Eve by members of the United States Marine Corps.

The team featured several talented college football players. Unfortunately, several of them later lost their lives during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. The film follows four of America’s top college football players who give up their dreams and promising futures to join the Marines following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The film stars Nicholas Galitzine as John McLaughry and Bill Skarsgård as Bob Baumann. Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis have also joined the cast, playing Tony Butkovich and David Schreiner, respectively. Friday Night Lights director Berg is also set to make an appearance in the film as General Buckner, as per Variety.
