Artificial intelligence and technology have become indispensable in today's world, transforming the very way we lead our lives. Its impact is becoming more apparent in a number of domains, including social media, cell phones, business, education, health, and entertainment. A number of movies and series have emerged lately, highlighting this issue and attempting to paint a picture of a future where humans fail to recognize how machines and AI are as much a bane as they are a boon. The most recent story to come out, taking this discussion further, is the Mexican sci-fi and psychological thriller series, Futuro Desierto, on Netflix.
But whether it succeeds in conveying what it wants to say and whether it is worth the viewers’ time is the main question here.

Futuro Desierto on Netflix centers on a psychologist who, after losing his wife, creates humanoid robots to aid in grieving and processing the tragedy he has been through. But when one of the androids unexpectedly fails, it sets off a chain of events that fundamentally changes reality as they knew it.
The show adheres to traditional science fiction conventions. There are unavoidable parallels the movie draws with Ex Machina and Blade Runner. Both philosophical conundrums pertaining to the humanity of technology and aesthetics echo those references. The series tries its best to weave together a compelling narrative of a haunting future.
Futuro Desierto's usage of artificial intelligence to discuss societal isolation is what makes it intriguing. Creator Lucía Puenzo focuses on how people respond to things that they perceive as distinctive. Robots are frightening not only because of their technological prowess but also because they defy accepted standards of cohabitation, empathy, and identity.
These are not the sole selling points of the Netflix series, as it has more merits to its credit.
An urgent social commentary used as a storytelling device
The story's interpretation of power structures is another important component. Robots assume the forms of women or other members of social minorities, whereas doctors and scientists are represented by men. If we consider that the various artificial intelligences are intended to obey, accompany, and fulfill human emotional requirements, the choice appears to be intentional.

In this way, the show addresses contemporary discussions about prejudice against those who are different, gender inequity, female representation in technology, and the ethics of artificial intelligence. While all this does not necessarily make Futuro Desierto the best sci-fi content on Netflix, but they definitely gives it enough value to check it out once.
