Bandi presents the fictional tale of the Lafleur family, which descends into chaos after the death of their matriarch, Marylin. Penned by a talented writing team including Éric Rochant, the show reimagines life in Martinique through the eyes of eleven orphaned siblings. As per Broadcast Now, while the show lacks a direct real-life antecedent, it is loosely inspired by the London-based series Top Boy.
"I wanted to see if it was possible to do a French Top Boy, a series about drug trafficking with a young cast", co-showrunner Éric Rochant stated to Broadcast Now. The creative team also drew thematic elements from Peaky Blinders and Shameless to build their world.
Although slavery ended on the island in 1848, the generational impact remains visible through extreme unemployment rates that are double the national average of France, as reported by the French report by Insee. These real-world statistics provide the narrative foundation for the characters, as youth unemployment serves as the primary catalyst for their descent into crime in Bandi.
Moreover, the creators utilized specific cultural mirrors to reflect the hardships faced by the island residents.
Bandi- Authenticity rooted in economic and social reality
Netflix's Bandi is not based on a single true story, but it remains a gritty depiction of poverty and survival. This eight-episode series follows siblings aged 7 to 23 who turn to trafficking to stay together. Their struggle highlights the desperation inherent in systemic neglect.
The plot revolves around the Lafleur family's strategy to avoid being split up by social services. While the characters are fictional, their journey is rooted in the harsh realities of a French-controlled Caribbean territory. It portrays a family unit forced into a dangerous survival strategy.

To ensure cultural authenticity, the production features an all-Caribbean cast and local artists like trap artist Evil P. This focus on local representation highlights the economic desperation that drives youth into the drug trade. The result is a realistic portrayal of regional crime and violence. This gripping series masterfully transforms the struggle for family unity into a criminal epic.
