The plot of Little Amélie or the Character of Rain

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain follows Amélie, who is born into a vegetative state in a Belgian family living in Kobe, Japan. She awakens after two massive, shocking incidents, with one being a powerful earthquake and the other of her discovering a delicate Belgian chocolate brought by her grandmother. During her vegetative state, she was mostly observing the world without movement and even developed a kind of god complex.

Although she is able speak after waking up from her vegetative state, this is her first real encounter with the world. This also shows her friendship with her nanny, Nishio-San. The movie brilliantly allows viewers inside the mind of a toddler. So, whether it wins an Oscar or not, the movie is worth watching this year.
