The entire Bridgerton family was seen mourning the loss of John when Francesca declared that she was pregnant, believing in her missed monthly courses. Calling the unborn child a final gift from her husband, she tried to comfort herself while preparing for John’s funeral. However, in Season 4 of Bridgerton, Francesca is urged to undergo a test to confirm her pregnancy, which will determine the line of succession for the Kilmartin estate.

Both Violet and Eloise accompany Francesca for the harsh medical examination typical of the Regency era. As revealed in the official Shondaland recap of Season 4, the test ultimately confirms that Francesca is not pregnant. The painful truth ultimately shatters her completely, and she breaks down in tears.

Francesca regrets being left with nothing from her husband to remember him by. With that, the only hope she had after John’s death also disappears. The series will continue to follow Francesca as she comes to terms with the loss of her husband.

As per the creators, there is still much more until a major character moment could surface for Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd.

What is next for Francesca?

Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell has made it clear that Francesca’s era of grief is not over yet. However, as the readers already know from Julia Quinn’s original novels, the character will find love again in John Sterling’s cousin, Michael Stirling. Now, the series has made a few changes to the character Michael Stirling.

The show has reimagined the character as Michaela for a potentially groundbreaking queer romance. There is also a growing speculation that the arc following Francesca and her romance with Michaela may arrive in Season 6 rather than Season 5, giving her the space and time for healing she deserves.

Even though it will take time, one thing is certain, and that is Francesca will eventually find happiness and love.
