The Interstellar-like sci-fi film in focus is The Martian, the 2015 film directed by Ridley Scott. The story follows astronaut Mark Watney, who is left behind on Mars after a fierce storm forces his crew to evacuate, believing he is dead.
Using his engineering skills, scientific knowledge, and sheer determination, Watney fights to survive on the barren planet while NASA and his crewmates work tirelessly to bring him home. Currently streaming on Netflix, The Martian will leave the platform on January 1, 2026, giving viewers only the final three days of December to watch it.
After its Netflix departure, The Martian will remain available on other streaming platforms, but only through rental or purchase. Amazon Prime Video offers the film for rent at $3.99 or to buy at $4.99, while Apple TV makes it available to both rent and purchase at $4.99. Although the movie will not be included with a subscription on these platforms, these options give viewers a chance to continue enjoying the title. The Martian, meanwhile, is not the only film leaving Netflix as the new year begins.
The list of movies departing the platform includes iconic rom-coms, gangster thrillers, literature-based adaptations, and more.
What is on Netflix’s chopping block for January 2026
Romantic comedies like Runaway Bride and Confessions of a Shopaholic are bidding farewell, while Scarface, the iconic crime thriller starring Al Pacino, is also exiting the platform next month. The entire Fifty Shades trilogy is scheduled to leave as well. Additional titles include the Kung Fu Panda trilogy, The Hangover trilogy, and the adventure classic The Goonies.

With all these cherished films preparing to exit the platform, the final days of December offer a narrow window to revisit them before they disappear from Netflix’s library. From space survival dramas to rom-com staples and cult classics, the upcoming purge marks a noticeable shift in the streamer’s catalogue.
Still, as these titles roll off, Netflix is already looking ahead, lining up an intriguing slate of films and series for 2026, signalling that while some doors are closing, new ones are set to open in the months ahead. The platform proves that farewells are often made to create space for something new.
