Netflix is jumping into the fast-moving documentary space with Instadocs, a new quick-turn non-fiction series built around the hot stories right now. It will premiere globally on May 30, 2026, on Netflix. The series begins with Instadocs: Alex Murdaugh, Unconvicted, the first episode of the headline-driven documentary format.

It focuses on breaking and developing stories. Additionally, it is designed to respond in near real time, taking a closer look at major ongoing cases while they are still unfolding. It also aims to provide viewers a timely, inside-the-moment perspective instead of a years-later retrospective.

As Instadocs promises a fast-moving look at the stories with timely reporting, people are focusing on the plot of the first episode.

What to expect from Instadocs' first episode?

In 2023, former lawyer Alex Murdaugh was convicted of the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. He was convicted of two counts of murder and two counts of using a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He also pleaded guilty to many financial crimes.

Murdaugh was serving a life sentence at a maximum-security prison with consecutive sentences. However, his team appealed the verdict, saying Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill tampered with the jury. On May 13, 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his double-murder conviction, and he will be granted a new trial later this year.
