Here’s How VFX Artist Brought Lucifer’s Hell to Life in ‘The Sandman’

The Sandman, Neil Gaiman’s iconic comic series, is many things: imaginative, eccentric, and downright dark. It’s packed to the brim with gods, monsters, real-life historical individuals, talking animals, and magic. Fortunately Netflix’s The Sandman adaptation, thoroughly embraces every dark, larger-than-life facet of Gaiman’s novel, taking viewers on a surreal trip through realms both familiar and distant.

There are times that feel as if they were intentionally pulled from the pages of the original comic, as well as episodes that masterfully merge the narrative of numerous issues into something wholly new, with sumptuous imagery and gorgeously constructed settings. So to celebrate the great visuals of the show why not take a look at how they brought Lucifer’s Hell to life in shows episode 4?

VFX breakdown of The Sandman Episode four

This debut season of the highly anticipated The Sandman included a number of critical scenes. Episode four Hope in Hell was one such important point in the story. In the episode Dream aka Morpheus travels to the Underworld to meet Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie). As the episode takes place entirely in Hell it required a huge amount of CGI.

And the VFX artists delivered with par excelence. Every little detail in the episode down to the wings of Lucifer is extremely well done. The Sandman has created a benchmark for VFX in the tv series. And here is a behind the scene look at how Hell was brought to life in the show.

The small one-minute look into the filming of the episode gives us a brief look at how the production took place. However, it is mesmerizing to see that through years of hard work, artists were able to create Hell. In the video, we can see that each scene went through extensive layering and masking before it was finally used in the show.

All hard work paid off in the end when The Sandman man was praised for its visuals. If the show receives a second season fans surely will recieve more of such amazing CGI moments.
