Netflix has officially announced the acquisition of I Am Frankelda, which is scheduled to premiere globally in 2026. This project is a historic milestone as the first feature-length stop-motion production ever created in Mexico.

The film has already captured the attention of the industry, securing a nomination for Best Independent Feature Film at the upcoming Annie Awards. The project was developed by the talented Ambriz brothers at their Mexico City-based studio, Cinema Fantasma.

“Frankelda is a landmark in Mexican Stop-Motion animation and a true triumph of vision, tenacity and love for the craft”, quote from Guillermo del Toro.

The narrative journey takes viewers deep into a world where imagination and reality collide in spectacular fashion.

A dark journey through fiction and the subconscious

Set in nineteenth-century Mexico, the story follows Frankelda, a gifted writer whose haunting tales are consistently dismissed by society. Her struggle to find her voice takes a supernatural turn when she is suddenly thrust into her own subconscious.

In this strange realm, the very monsters she invented come to life, forcing her to confront her creations. She must navigate this dangerous landscape to restore the delicate balance between fiction and the real world.

Supporting Frankelda is Herneval, a tormented prince who exists between the dimensions of dreams and nightmares. As the two grow closer, they must work together to stop the sinister writer Procustes from seizing control.
