Netflix is postponing the release of its highly anticipated Narnia movie from director Greta Gerwig, with the film now getting a wide theatrical release. Gerwig’s adaptation of the sixth book in the CS Lewis’ fantasy series, The Magician’s Nephew, was scheduled to be released in IMAX theatres this Thanksgiving before it moves to the streaming service on Christmas Day.
The film will now be released on February 12, 2027 and arrive on Netflix April 2, 2027. Sneak previews of the film begin February 10, 2027, exclusively in IMAX. The alleged reason for the delay is that a cast member was reportedly hurt, which pushed production back six weeks. Narnia would no longer be releasing on its Thanksgiving IMAX date.
Talking about The Chronicles of Narnia, Gerwig stated in a statement:
“Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary, and Imax continues to be an incredible partner. I cannot wait for people to see the film in theaters on February 12 and on Netflix on April 2.”
“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life.”
However, beyond release dates and delays, what truly awaits in this magical retelling, and who is bringing these iconic characters to life?
From Aslan’s origin story to a star-studded cast: What to expect from Greta Gerwig’s Narnia reboot
Narnia: The Magician's Nephew is based on the 1955 novel of the same name by CS Lewis. It is the story of how Narnia was created. Children Digory and Polly are magically transported by rings into new worlds. They see Aslan create Narnia, accidentally bring the evil Queen Jadis into Narnia, and plant an apple tree that protects the new land and whose magic heals Digory’s sick mother.
The Magician’s Nephew is set to be directed by Gerwig, whose vision promises a blend of wonder, emotion, and spectacle. It could actually transform how audiences engage with The Chronicles of Narnia on screen. The film is produced by Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith, and Gerwig.
