Despite Top 10 success and more than a billion minutes watched, Geena Davis is still struggling to understand why Netflix abruptly pulled the plug on The Boroughs. The supernatural mystery quickly became one of the streamer’s biggest recent hits, making its sudden cancellation all the more surprising for both fans and the cast. And now, Davis is opening up about the shocking decision, admitting that even she has no idea what went wrong behind the scenes.

Yet despite its success, The Boroughs seems to have become the latest reminder that in the streaming era, even a hit may not be safe.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Geena Davis revealed that neither she nor the cast were given a clear explanation for why Netflix chose not to renew The Boroughs for a second season. While the producers informed the team before the news became public, the decision still came as a major surprise. “We’re all terribly disappointed,” Davis admitted, before adding that she honestly does not know what happened. The actress also pointed to the show’s strong performance on Netflix, noting that cancellations are rarely announced while a series is still sitting in the platform’s top 10 rankings.

"Fortunately, the producers, who became our dear, dear friends, were able to tell us before the news came out, and we're all terribly disappointed. Honestly, I don't know what happened." Davis said.

Despite her disappointment, Davis believes the creators succeeded in delivering a story that can stand on its own. Talking further with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress shared how the writers intentionally avoided ending Season 1 on a major cliffhanger, choosing instead to craft a complete narrative that would remain satisfying even if no renewal followed. Although the finale leaves behind a small hint that not everything has been resolved, Davis feels audiences still received a full story. The news of The Boroughs’ cancellation broke earlier this week, bringing an abrupt end to the supernatural mystery’s short-lived run.

However, the thriller had a three-season roadmap designed to expand the show’s mythology before Netflix pulled the plug.

The Boroughs had a much bigger story planned

While Geena Davis believes Season 1 works as a complete story, the creators reportedly had far bigger ambitions for the series. The next chapter would have built directly on one of the finale’s strangest moments, when Sam Cooper’s reflection briefly glitches like television static. According to the creators, Season 2 was expected to explore themes of transmission and signals, raising questions about whether Sam truly escaped Mother’s influence or had unknowingly entered an artificial reality created by the mysterious alien entity.

The planned story would have also widened the scope of the show’s mythology far beyond the New Mexico retirement community. Future seasons were reportedly set to explore Mother’s origins, the fate of her surviving offspring, and the consequences of destroying the bizarre fountain-of-youth operation that powered the conspiracy. At the same time, the series intended to remain grounded in the personal struggles of its elderly protagonists, balancing supernatural mysteries with themes of aging, grief, loneliness, and second chances.

Unfortunately for fans, Netflix’s complete ownership of the franchise means those unfinished storylines are unlikely to find a home elsewhere, leaving much of The Boroughs’ larger vision permanently untold.
