Japanese dramas, or simply J-Dramas, have been on the rise in the USA since last year. Emerging as a major cultural phenomenon, these have significantly impacted mainstream entertainment discussions and viewer involvement, marking a shift in US viewing habits as well. Streaming platforms, hence, have made significant efforts to bring as many Japanese titles to US screens as possible, adhering to their growing demand.

In a similar effort, Netflix has added a new J-drama called Fumochitai, aka The Wasteland, for its US audience.

The new Netflix addition as of March 2, 2026, Fumochitai, aka The Wasteland, is a period drama set after the events of World War II. During the war, a military commander named Iki Tadashi was taken prisoner by the Soviet Union. He was condemned to several years of labor in a harsh Siberian jail camp after being tried as a war criminal.

Upon his release from prison after serving 11 years, he returns to Japan. Rejecting an offer from his former colleague to work on a defense project, he tries to acclimatize to life as a civilian. Tadashi even decides to never engage in combat again. Rather, he makes an effort to start over by working for a large trade organization, which becomes his salvation.

The series came out in 2009 and has a total of 20 episodes. With an IMDb rating of 8, it might possibly be Tokoyo Yamasaki's 1970's novel's best adaptation, by far.

Popular J-Dramas already on Netflix

There are several J-dramas that are already streaming on Netflix, and have carved out a special place for themselves among the audience. Alice in Borderland, which was released in 2020 on Netflix, is an example of a beloved J-Drama among the American audience. The show follows two anime gamers who end up in Parallel Tokyo, a dystopian world. It is a survival thriller with elements of adventure, making it a pretty engaging watch.

Another popular J-Drama should be An Incurable Case of Love, which was also released in 2020. This is a rom-com series where a teenage student falls in love with a handsome doctor. Although there are some serious moments in the series, it is mostly humorous.
