From Courtrooms to Netflix’s Top Charts: The True Story Behind ‘Nobody Dumps My Daughter’
Movies are generally made up of fiction. But several times, movies have turned to real-life events and adapted them for a retelling for the screen. However, sometimes these true events seem so absurd and far-fetched that it really seems to be a work of fiction. The 2024 Lifetime movie, Nobody Dumps My Daughter, is based on such a true story that is so bizarre that it almost appears to be a plot for the movies.
The title, which is now dominating the top charts of Netflix, has inspired viewers to read up on the true story, which has a really implausible motivation behind it.

In October 2024, Nobody Dumps My Daughter debuted as a film in Lifetime's Ripped from the Headlines series. It is actually based on the murder of Joey Fischer, an 18-year-old high school student who was shot and killed outside his family's Rancho Viejo, Texas, house on March 3, 1993.
It all started when high school student Fischer started dating Cristina Cisneros from the same high school, but they eventually broke up, leaving Cristina emotionally devastated. This did not sit right with her superstitious mother, Dora Cisneros, who desperately wanted both of them to get back together.
Cisneros even offered Fischer some money in order to motivate him to reconcile with her daughter, but he declined. She then decided to go see Maria Mercedes Martinez, a fortune teller, to cast a spell on him. However, the fortune teller could not cast a spell on him, and Cisneros chose an alternate route to have him killed instead.
She hired a killer, Daniel Orlando Garza, through Martinez, who in turn hired two hitmen, Israel Olivares and Heriberto Pizana. The two hitmen shot Fischer on March 3, 1993, in his family’s driveway. Both men defected to Mexico after the shooting and were never found by the authorities.
But what happened to Dora Cisneros, the mastermind behind the killing of an innocent teenager?
Was Dora Cisneros put to justice?
Indeed, Dora Cisneros and Maria Mercedes Martinez were taken into custody in April 1993. Cisneros was convicted of killing Fischer in March 1994. Both she and Garza received life sentences. Martinez was sentenced to 20 years in jail after entering a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit murder, according to The New York Times.

According to myRGV.com, Garza is still serving his life sentence as of 2026, and Cisneros is still behind bars. However, Martinez only served six years in prison before being released in April 2001. According to reports, she passed away in Matamoros, Mexico. This story, adapted in Nobody Dumps My Daughter, just like several other movies based on true events, gives a glimpse of the harsh reality of the world and the people that exist in it.
