Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Netflix Series Announced: Streamer to Bring the Legendary Romance to Life

It is very hard to describe Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera simply as artists, but one thing is certain: they are celebrated as timeless icons in Mexican culture. Their legacy as fearless, defiant, and supremely talented artists transcends boundaries, so much so that there have been several attempts to capture different aspects of the Mexican painters’ lives and their artistic journey through documentaries, films, and other projects.
Now, Netflix has also added its name to the list, making an effort to bring a very different, personal, and intimate part of their lives to the screen.

Netflix is currently working on a series about the tumultuous relationship between famous Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The series, which has not yet been given a title, will dive into their lives and examine how political, social, and artistic developments over the years affected their personal and professional life.
The streamer has brought Mexican Film director Patricia Riggen from Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan and writer-director-producer Gabriel Ripstein from 600 Miles and Narcos on board for this project. It is going to be an adaptation of French author Claire Berest's book Rien n'est noir, which translates to The Award-Winning Novel About the Colorful and Captivating Life of Frida Kahlo.
The show will be produced by Mónica Lozano of Alebrije Producciones (Amores Perros, Instructions Not Included). Netflix has appointed writer-actor María Renée Prudencio, known for Club Sandwich and Los Adioses, as the head writer of the series, who is given the Herculean task of bringing the intense, turbulent, yet passionate relationship of two of Mexico’s legendary artists.
The most intriguing part is how the makers are planning to shape this epic saga that has so much history, and especially the feelings of the Mexican populace involved.
The ambition and aim of the upcoming Netflix series
In an exclusive interview with Variety, Carolina Leconte, the content VP of Netflix Mexico, said that the show will attempt to present an unadulterated and raw side of Frida's life in a time when she, along with Rivera, played an instrumental role in taking Mexico to the global stage. It is their goal to take the viewers to the thick of things in their relationship and portray everything with the utmost truth and reality.
To keep the story grounded and sincere, they strive to stick to local tales and lore to show everything from the love they had to the toxicity that drove a wedge between them. Nonetheless, she believes in Patricia Riggen and Gabriel Ripstein to create a Frida and Diego who are unnerving, seductive, and as embedded in reality as possible.

Well, this series might help people to understand Frida Kahlo better, not just as an artist but as a person. The myth behind her personal and professional life has always made it difficult to get a version of her on the screen that is as connected to her real-life persona as possible. Let us hope this will not be a problem with this series, and it gives a fresh take on the personal dynamics of the couple.
