But Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres has successfully managed to tear through this hardship. At 59, the Rio de Janeiro-born actress is among the most talented names in the industry and has numerous acting credits and accolades to her name. Netflix has made its audience happy by just announcing that I’m Still Here is coming to the platform on May 17 in the United States. After its phenomenal earnings of US$25.2 million and numerous critical acclaim, the movie was highly anticipated for a digital debut. Fernanda Torres' portrayal of a mother and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her political husband made it the best South American movie of 2024.

At the 2025 Academy Awards, it received three nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best International Feature Film, out of which it won the last one. But it did become the first Brazilian film to be nominated for Best Picture. On the Brazilian home front, it succeeded despite facing a political boycott by activists who spoke out against the portrayal of the military regime in the movie.

 I’m Still Here was based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, which followed Eunice Paiva’s journey, who was married to a former politician during the military dictatorship in Brazil, and is forced to reinvent herself and chart a new course for her family after a violent and arbitrary act. Directed by Walter Salles, it also starred Selton Mello and Fernanda Montenegro, and became the highest-grossing Brazilian film since the pandemic.

Fernanda Torres, who was last seen on the big screen in 2019 in Lina Bo Bardi: A Marvelous Entanglement, gave such a compelling performance in this movie that it bagged her a slew of nominations in this year’s award season. She became the second Brazilian to be nominated for a Golden Globe, which she won, and also bagged Best Actress at the São Paulo Art Critics Association, Satellite Awards, Platino Awards, and many more.  As the movie arrives on Netflix, fans could once again enjoy her performance.
