Fact Check: Is Halloween the Big Day for the 'Stranger Things' 5 Trailer Release or Just a Hoax?

Published 10/20/2025, 6:36 AM EDT

The wait is nearly over for Stranger Things fans. A saga that began nearly a decade ago is nearing its closure, with the promise of bringing along a storm of heartbreaks, mysteries, showdowns, and goosebumps. In just about a month, Stranger Things will once again pull fans back into the chaos of Hawkins and its eerie parallel dimension. However, despite being so close to release, the fifth and final season still does not have an official trailer in sight.

Nonetheless, the Stranger Things fandom is convinced that this Halloween will mark the trailer’s arrival as well. And it is hard to argue, considering the show’s deep-rooted ties to the supernatural.

Stranger Things Season 5 released a teaser trailer in July 2025, which, as expected, led to a flood of discussions across social media about what the upcoming season might hold. But that was only the teaser. The official trailer is still under wraps. According to a popular rumor, the official trailer might drop at the end of October, which also happens to be Halloween. And it makes sense, considering how the show has timed its volumes' releases around major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. There is another logic to this theory as well.

Historically, the first official trailer of Stranger Things has always arrived roughly a month before the season’s release. It is then followed by a final trailer about a week ahead of the premiere. Given how close we are to the release date, it would not be too far-fetched to expect a Halloween Stranger Things surprise. And even if that is not the case, the official trailer will most likely land by the first week of November. Unless, of course, the Duffer Brothers decide to play crueler than Vecna, and only a bit of David Harbour-level aggression can shake it loose.

Although the brothers have kept their lips sealed mostly, they have recently debunked a rumor that has been circulating all over social media for months.

No room for fake news in Hawkins

Social media has been imagining some of the longest episodes in TV history for Stranger Things Season 5. Their ambitious guesses ranged from 2 hours and 5 minutes to 3 hours for the finale. Some of the cast members also teased the season as being the equivalent of multiple movies. Ross Duffer quickly shot those claims down on Instagram Stories earlier this year, confirming that the runtimes are “not even close to accurate.” This month, the makers have finally given fans a glimpse of the “ACTUAL runtimes”.

A video shared by them showed Chapter One: The Crawl running 1 hour and 8 minutes, Chapter Two: The Vanishing of… at 54 minutes, Chapter Three: The Turnbow Trap at 1 hour and 6 minutes, and Chapter Four: Sorcerer stretching to 1 hour and 23 minutes. The runtimes for the remaining episodes, which will arrive later, are still unknown, though, and so is the date for the official trailer.
