Netflix’s catalogue is forever playing musical chairs, with viewers' routine comfort watches making room for fresh arrivals making room for titles. The platform may have an ever-expanding collection of original productions and acquired entertainment, but maintaining that library also means bidding farewell to films, television favorites.

The streaming giant is heading into December with a little housekeeping, and some rather recognizable names are caught in the clear-out.

December brings another sizeable reshuffle, and the first day of the month is shaping up to be particularly unforgiving for subscribers. As per usual, the spring cleaning includes several films, old and new.

But why does Netflix keep making room by letting familiar titles go, even when they have managed to find a lasting audience?

A streaming library might look permanent from the outside, but much of its collection depends on agreements that come with an expiry date. When Netflix licenses a film or series from another rights holder, it secures permission to stream that content for a negotiated period, rather than acquiring unlimited ownership of it.

Once the agreement approaches its end, the platform must either renew the deal, negotiate new terms, or allow the title to disappear from its catalog.

Even the Netflix Original label does not guarantee a permanent home, since some productions are international co-productions or exclusive distribution acquisitions with their own contractual limits. This upcoming December's list includes examples such as The Last Kingdom and Crazyhead, which are marked as Netflix Original removals, illustrating how complicated those arrangements can become.
