At the San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Netflix's Dragon's Lair movie received a major update, which got the green light in 2020 as a live-action/CGI hybrid, bringing the nostalgic game's cartoon flair to the big screen. With Ryan Reynolds on board as a producer, the film has stalled in development hell until the directorial helm was transferred to James Bobin. One of the other producers, Roy Lee, revealed to Collider that the movie originally had a 400-page interactive script where the fate of the protagonists could be chosen by the viewers, like in Black Mirror. However, they had been "reconfiguring it as a straight, linear movie," after derailing from the format.

Initially, Ryan Reynolds was supposed to play Dirk the Daring, but that was changed as well. Staying true to the mastery of the game, the production team behind the movie had reportedly been putting hefty efforts into intersecting it with technology in rather unique ways. Sharing his unbridled enthusiasm about the project with another Collider interview in 2022, Reynolds commended their craft, pointing to "pretty innovative stabs at this particular IP in a way that I'm blown away with." Though the movie will no longer follow its old multi-perspective outcome format, Reynolds' involvement is enough to ensure Netflix bags another blockbuster, besides the generational following of the game itself.

What and when to expect the Dragon's Lair movie on Netflix?

Birthing a gaming revolution of their time, ex-Disney animator Don Bluth, alongside Gary Goldman and Jon Pomeroy, co-created Dragon's Lair in the 80s, becoming a groundbreaking moment in history with its cinematic narratives and animated sequences. On screen, the game has previously enjoyed short-lived cartoons and comics during the mid-1980s, solidifying itself in pop culture. From cassettes and floppy disks to Netflix, Dragon's Lair has experienced a timeless appreciation in media, now with the movie in development.
