David Dastmalchian’s role as Mr. 3 in One Piece: Into the Grand Line allows him to explore new acting territory, which takes him to his son's preferred realm of live-action anime, a place where they can bond freely. The actor's best moment came when his son reacted with disbelief, as he found it hard to comprehend the TV show that passed down family stories as if they were precious family traditions.
Speaking with Deadline red carpet interview clip from the One Piece Season 2 premiere, Dastmalchian expressed immense enthusiasm for portraying Mr. 3, a Baroque Works villain with wax-manipulating powers. He also highlighted his young son's ecstatic reaction to the news.
"The thing that drew me to One Piece was [...] my 11-year-old son. He's the most devoted One Piece manga reader, and he knew everything about that world. And when the anime became something we could watch, and then the live-action series started, our house was very excited about it," the actor told Deadline.
Dastmalchain compared the magic and wonder of the show to The Wizard of Oz, which brought back his joyous childhood memories, and as transportational storytelling. His son's reaction to finding out that he was playing Mr. Three was heartwarming, as he freaked out in excitement, per the actor.
Eventually, as he brought his son and daughter to Cape Town while filming, they got to see him become Mr. Three, while also becoming close to the cast.
