Greta Gerwig has apparently decided that Narnia could use less dusty British restraint and considerably more rock-and-roll sparkle. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is bringing C.S. Lewis’s magical world into the post-war 1950s, with a remarkably talented cast transformed along the way. Daniel Craig is joining the fun, trading his immaculate 007 image for Uncle Andrew.
After Meryl Streep had her first-look moment, Daniel Craig followed by stepping into Narnia as the wonderfully peculiar Uncle Andrew.

Daniel Craig has officially entered Narnia, and has fully taken on the transformation of Uncle Andrew Ketterley. The first look, revealed exclusively by Empire Magazine, shows Craig buried in a wonderfully eccentric world of gadgets, magical trinkets, and theatrical clutter. It is a fitting introduction to the peculiar magician who helps send Digory and Polly between worlds.
Craig trades James Bond’s crisp suits and polished spy swagger for a disheveled academic look that feels perfectly at home in Uncle Andrew’s chaotic study. Greta Gerwig has described the character as “the stupidest magician in the world who actually made magic,” and the costume certainly captures that deliciously misguided energy.
Curiosity, rather than outright wickedness, drives this Narnian troublemaker.

The surroundings make the transformation even more entertaining, with Uncle Andrew’s workshop packed with colourful inventions and clues to his dangerous experiments. Among the clutter are hints of the green and yellow rings that carry Digory and Polly into other worlds. Empire Magazine’s first look therefore offers more than Craig in costume; it teases Greta Gerwig’s wonderfully maximalist Narnia.
Just as Greta Gerwig’s distinctive vision emerged in the first look at Meryl Streep’s Aslan, her Uncle Andrew comes with a wonderfully specific twist.

Greta Gerwig clearly has no interest in making Uncle Andrew Ketterley the sort of villain who enters a room and waits ominously for thunder. From what she told Empire Magazine, one can conclude that her version is far more amusingly disastrous: a man whose excitement about discovering something extraordinary repeatedly outruns his ability to consider what might happen next.
Daniel Craig captures that dangerous blend of vanity, curiosity, and foolish enthusiasm.

That makes Uncle Andrew an unexpectedly important troublemaker in Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. His meddling sends Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer across worlds, helping unleash Jadis and setting events surrounding Aslan and Narnia into motion. In other words, Greta Gerwig has turned one eccentric magician into the wonderfully misguided spark that helps ignite the entire Narnian mythology.
