Netflix has fired Dan Lin as its film chief, ending the producer’s run at the streamer. His departure comes as Netflix rethinks who should steer its movie slate and how much it should spend to compete for viewers. The question is who now decides which films Netflix backs, and whether Lin’s strategy survives him.

For an executive hired to reshape Netflix’s film strategy, Lin’s abrupt exit marks a sharp turn in a tenure that was supposed to change how the streamer makes movies.

Dan Lin joined Netflix in 2024 as film chairman, succeeding Scott Stuber. He was tasked with overseeing a slate balancing expensive filmmaker-led projects with global hits. Variety has reported he was let go over the weekend, but Netflix has not publicly explained the decision, and no permanent replacement has been announced.

Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the former Warner Bros. film chiefs, have surfaced in industry speculation, but neither has been confirmed for the job.

Lin had pursued tighter spending and said he had greenlit or acquired 88 films during his tenure. The slate included Apex, Emilia Pérez and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The latter and David Fincher’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth are planned for exclusive IMAX theatrical windows before streaming, as a concession to directors who want big-screen releases, all of which Lin’s successor will likely inherit after the ousting Variety has reported.

His departure, however, is only one part of a much wider leadership reorganization taking place across Netflix.

Netflix is changing who holds creative power

Netflix plans to cut around 1,000 employees, about 6% of its workforce. Dan Lin’s close deputy Doug Belgrad, and Sheroum Kim, who led the independent-film operation, were among the departures. Chief content officer Bela Bajaria also left after nearly a decade.

Peter Rice, the former Fox and Disney executive, will replace her on October 26 and oversee Netflix’s global content organization, including film, television and live events. Netflix has not confirmed who will directly run the film division.

Netflix is currently facing questions about slower engagement and a falling share price, and withdrew from the Warner Bros. Discovery bidding process when the deal no longer made financial sense. These pressures do not prove why Lin was fired, but they help explain why spending and hit-making are under scrutiny. The next appointment will show whether Netflix sticks with Lin’s tighter approach or takes its films in another direction.
