Period gangster dramas have a certain appeal that is hard to put into words. The stylized sets, the retro costumes, and the vibe of a different world entirely. The story and the characters obviously matter the most, but all those other elements just add to the charm of the drama.

Over the years, we have seen some exceptional products from this genre, like The Godfather saga (1972-74), Once Upon a Time in America (1984), Goodfellas (1990), etc. But in recent memory, Peaky Blinders stands out as the most beloved period gangster drama purely based on its superior storytelling and even brilliant acting, especially from Cillian Murphy.

Well, he is all set to don his flat cap and march to Birmingham once more in the upcoming Netflix movie Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, and fans have this reason to thank.

The reason behind Cillian Murphy’s return as Tommy Shelby

It is a world-renowned fact that Cillian Murphy can get very picky about the scripts he chooses. So, convincing him to come onboard the Peaky Blinders movie must have been quite a challenge. But what he revealed in a recent interview with Deadline suggests otherwise.

"It was pretty much from like 2019-2020 we’ve been talking about this and going through different versions of the script and working it and reworking and revising it." The statement points out that Murphy was already involved in the ideation part and during the developmental phase, too.

Just true to his nature, the Oscar-winning actor wanted to make sure the movie did not feel out of place or meaningless after the pertinent finale of season 6 before he agreed to return to his iconic role.

"For me personally, I really felt that the film needed to justify its existence because I love the ambiguity of the ending of Season 6,” said Murphy in the same interview.

The reason we will get to see Cillian Murphy making a comeback as the legendary gangster is because he felt they "had to open it up more" and that it totally makes sense.

However, the Irish actor did not just want the movie have a reason to exist but to improve on it. According to him, the story always had this cinematic feel to it, but it had the potential to go even further. The Oppenheimer star has given more than enough for the fans to be excited about the movie.

All this raises one’s intrigue about the plot and the star cast that is going to headline such a hyped project.

The story and cast of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man

The movie is set in the era of WWII, where the whole world is thrown into chaos. Amidst this situation, Tommy Shelby is forced to come out of a self-imposed exile and be involved in a gang war that will decide the fate of his family. The movie will explore his inner battle with his demons and what he wants his legacy to be.

Alongside Cillian Murphy, we will see Stephen Graham as Hayden Stagg, Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, and Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong, making a comeback in the movie. On the other hand, Tim Roth, Barry Keoghan, and Jay Lycurgo are just a few of the significant cast additions. The cast looks pretty stacked, and this has piqued the audience’s interest even more.
