Paulo Coelho’s novels have become a global phenomenon, with The Alchemist alone translated into more than 80 languages and selling tens of millions of copies worldwide. His works, including Brida and Eleven Minutes, have inspired stage productions and earlier screen attempts, cementing his reputation as a storyteller whose blend of mysticism and self-discovery resonates across cultures and media.
Now, building on this legacy, Netflix is bringing one of his most introspective tales to life: Coelho's 1987 book, The Pilgrimage is being adapted for the screen.

Cameras are now rolling on Netflix’s cinematic adaptation of Paulo Coelho’s spiritual novel, titled The Pilgrimage, with Brazilian heavyweights Rodrigo Santoro and Johnny Massaro headlining the project, as reported by Deadline. The film, directed by Vicente Amorim, follows the story of Paulo, a disillusioned young man who sets out on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in search of meaning, self-discovery, and inner transformation.
Along the rugged trail through mountains, forests, and open fields, he is guided by the mysterious mentor Petrus, portrayed by Santoro, whose cryptic wisdom and strange tests push Paulo to confront both physical hardship and spiritual doubt. Blending the rhythms of a road movie with the quiet mysticism that defines Coelho’s writing, the production aims to translate the book’s introspective tone into a visually immersive journey filled with enigmatic encounters and subtle, unseen forces.
The ensemble cast also includes Lara Tremouroux, Julia Konrad, Silvio Guindane, and several actors rounding out Paulo’s family and key figures on the path. At the same time, a European supporting lineup adds depth to the pilgrimage’s dreamlike atmosphere. Shot on location in Spain, the film marks Netflix’s latest effort to bring one of Coelho’s most beloved works to life for a global audience.

The story follows Lowen as she accepts a job completing the unfinished manuscript of the reclusive novelist Verity, only to uncover a series of disturbing confessions hidden in the drafts that blur the line between fiction and real-life horror. With Josh Hartnett cast as Verity’s husband, Jeremy, and support from Ismael Cruz Cordóva and Brady Wagner, the project leans into domestic suspense and psychological manipulation rather than outright horror.
The film is set for theatrical release in the U.S. on October 2, 2026, after production wrapped in 2025, and will lean heavily on the built-in audience of Hoover’s novel, which has sold millions of copies worldwide. Alongside Netflix’s Paulo Coelho adaptation The Pilgrimage, Verity signals Hollywood’s growing appetite for high-quality, globally recognized source material, turning bestselling books into cinematic experiences.
