Netflix’s global hit Regency-era drama, Bridgerton, is once again bringing a royal love story that will sweep everyone off their feet. The streaming giant had already renewed the beloved period drama for both seasons 5 and 6 back in 2025. The story will pick up from the events of season 4, and Francesca, this time, will find herself battling complex feelings for a certain someone. 

With the plot of the upcoming season 5 already finalized, Netflix has released more, rather tumultuous details about it. 

Netflix has released a teaser to announce the start of production of Bridgerton season 5 and also revealed the leads of the season. Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza, who play Lady Francesca Stirling and Michaela Stirling, respectively, will be the main leads in the forthcoming episodes, which are currently being produced outside of London.  

Baduza will not only play Lord John Stirling’s cousin in this fifth season but also Francesca’s new love interest, according to Netflix Tudum. The teaser also shows the two looking elated as they stand next to each other, likely overlooking the Kilmartin estate. Hannah Dodd herself has spoken about the character's growth. 

“When you spend so much time with a character, you genuinely do want them to be happy. So I am really looking forward to [Francesca] feeling like she deserves love," Dodd told Netflix. 

Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell added her view on the impending season, saying that it seems revolutionary. She acknowledges that queer love has been portrayed in many excellent television programs, and they are by no means the first. However, a full season of Bridgerton devoted to a sapphic love is yet another sign of the expanding ShondaLand universe. Anyhow, Francesca and Michaela’s love story is destined to be epic based on the statements from both the leads and the showrunner.

But the road that leads to their happiness will not be that simple, as they both come from a tragic loss in season 4.

Viewers were devastated seeing Francesca and Michaela lose the person they both loved in the finale of Bridgerton season 4. Michaela lost her closest friend and confidant when Lord John Stirling (Victor Alli) passed away in Season 4, leaving Francesca widowed. Season 5 uses this tragedy as the trigger point that leads both women to embark on a new chapter of love and hope in the story, which is set two years after the events of season 4.

The success of season 4 on Netflix paved the way for two more seasons of the show. Now it all depends on how the makers shape up the story of Francesca and Michaela to make fans fall in love with the show once again. While the production has already begun for Bridgerton's season 5, the spectators are yet to receive release confirmations for the same.
