Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland banner, co-led by Betsy Beers, have officialized a massive new five-year overall deal with Netflix. Dubbed a "creative partnership," the extension secures Netflix as the exclusive home for Shondaland's upcoming series, feature films, video games, live event experiences, and branded merchandise through 2031. Crucially, the deal keeps intact Netflix’s financial backing for Shondaland’s Ladder Program, an initiative dedicated to training underrepresented below-the-line talent.

"For almost a decade, Netflix has provided Shondaland with the autonomy and support to tell our kind of stories — stories that both entertain and reflect diversity and humanity in a way that resonates with audiences around the world,” Rhimes said (via Variety).

Reflecting on the ongoing partnership, Rhimes noted, “I am so thankful to Ted [Sarandos], Bela [Bajaria] and the entire Netflix team for their continued partnership, trust and enthusiasm. Let’s go!"  

This latest extension marks the continuation of a historic gamble. When Rhimes originally made waves in 2017 by leaving her longtime television home at Disney/ABC for an initial $150 million Netflix deal, it signaled a seismic shift in the streaming wars, prioritizing direct talent retention over traditional network licensing. That pact expanded in 2021 to a $450 million valuation, and this newest renewal solidifies a decade-long alliance that has fundamentally reshaped global streaming.

Now that the pact is officially renewed, Rhimes is set to push that bold creative vision even further. Subscribers can look forward to a stacked pipeline featuring the upcoming White House murder mystery The Residence, a slate of new feature films, expanding video games, and immersive live events. Meanwhile, the library of Rhimes’ flagship medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, will continue streaming alongside a highly anticipated Texas-set spinoff slated for 2027.
