Findings from the gaming platform MP1st reveal that Firesprite, a primary Sony studio, spent several years developing a virtual reality experience. Better Call Saul screenwriter and producer, Jenn Carroll also developed multiple stories for video games including the VR. This project was not intended to be a full-length game, but rather a narrative journey built around recognizable settings from the series.
Creator Vince Gilligan discussed the project on the Inside the Gilliverse podcast three years back, noting that significant work had been completed before the eventual cancellation. The final confirmation of the project's cancellation came in 2022 when Vince Gilligan acknowledged the immense effort that had been invested. He noted that making a video game is incredibly difficult.
“Making a video game is damn hard. It takes years and millions of dollars, especially when you’re trying to break new ground with VR. It never came to fruition, though, which is a shame”, Vince Gilligan said.
The ambitious project appears to have been shelved after roughly a span of five-year development window since the announcement was made. The development studio faced internal restructuring and layoffs that led to the cancellation of various other digital projects. Gilligan noted that the team lacks the necessary bandwidth to make a massive video game work to his exact standards.
“We don’t have enough bandwidth usually to make it work, I wouldn’t hold your breath on a video game”, he said.
The origins of this virtual experiment began with a high-level meeting between television creators and technology executives.
The visionary collaboration between Sony and Vince Gilligan
Variety reported a collaboration between Vince Gilligan and Sony Interactive Entertainment first in 2017 to great excitement from the fan community. Former global chief executive Andrew House hosted an event where several elite showrunners were invited to experiment with virtual reality hardware. Gilligan was the one who expressed a strong desire to experiment with the medium.
The filmmaker wanted to use the unique capabilities of the hardware to tell a story that felt authentic to the source material. Executives were enthusiastic about his passion, believing that his storytelling style would translate perfectly into a 360-degree environment. This meeting of minds was intended to push the boundaries of how audiences interact with their favorite television characters and environments.
