Netflix’s Blood Sacrifice (Blodsoffer) plunges viewers into a dark Scandinavian mystery filled with ritualistic murders, troubled police officers, and a family forced to confront its past. With its grim atmosphere and disturbing crime scenes, the Swedish thriller feels eerily close to the kind of story that could have been ripped from a true-crime headline.
But is there a real case hiding behind the five-episode limited series? While Blood Sacrifice borrows elements from Swedish mythology and a famous piece of artwork, its central murder mystery is entirely fictional.

Blood Sacrifice is not based on real events. The series is a fictional crime thriller created by George Kay, best known for Lupin and Hijack, and directed by Kristoffer Nyholm. Its story, characters, and m****** are not based on any documented true-crime case. Instead, the series uses fictional characters and a carefully crafted m***** mystery to explore revenge, police corruption, and family tensions. While its dark and realistic tone may make the events feel disturbingly plausible, the story remains entirely a work of fiction.

The series does draw inspiration from a fascinating piece of Swedish cultural history. Carl Larsson’s c************ 1915 painting Midvinterblot (Midwinter Sacrifice), which depicts the mythical Swedish king Domalde being sacrificed, becomes a visual and thematic reference for the k*****’s gruesome staging. The connection is rooted in art and Norse legend rather than actual modern crimes.
And while the m****** are fictional, the story’s police investigation and complicated family dynamics give the thriller a grounded quality that makes its premise feel disturbingly believable.
What is Blood Sacrifice about and who stars in it?
Blood Sacrifice's story begins when two police officers respond to what appears to be a routine home-invasion call at a remote summer house in the Stockholm archipelago. By the next day, both officers are found dead, setting off a chilling investigation. As more m****** follow and the victims appear connected to law enforcement, detective Thomas Berg is forced to seek help from his estranged father, retired detective Alfred Berg. Together, the pair must put aside years of unresolved tension as they hunt for the killer before more officers become targets.

Leading the cast are Jakob Oftebro as Thomas Berg and Peter Andersson as Alfred Berg. They are joined by Electra Hallman, Alexander Abdallah, Henrik Norlén, Lisette T. Pagler, Magnus Krepper, Irina Björklund, Anders Mossling, and Anna Maria Käll. Filmed across Stockholm and its surrounding archipelago, Blood Sacrifice uses the long Nordic summer days and isolated landscapes to create an unsettling Scandinavian atmosphere. The story ultimately explores revenge, institutional failure, family reconciliation, and the consequences of a past police operation gone wrong.
Despite its realistic police investigation and disturbing ritualistic murders, Blood Sacrifice is fictional. Its connection to Midvinterblot adds a layer of Swedish mythology and history, but there is no real-life murder case behind the central story. The series draws on the eerie symbolism of Carl Larsson’s Midvinterblot to give its fictional m****** a deeper cultural context. However, the painting’s connection to the story is artistic and mythological rather than evidence of any real-life crime.
