In a world marked by heavy discourse on posthumanism, a K-pop icon directs her acting foray into a virtual reality-based romance on Netflix. Blackpink's Kim Jisoo presents a futuristic dating wonderland in Boyfriend on Demand, shortly after the pangs of 9-5 have started to settle in post-Valentine's month. While the singer is no stranger to K-dramas, having curated an extensive filmography in a brief period of time, the streaming titan is also arriving on deck fresh off with megahit rom-coms featuring seasoned idols like When Life Gives You Tangerines and Bon Appétit, Your Majesty. Jisoo plays Seo Mi-rae, the main character in Boyfriend on Demand, who works as a webtoon producer but has reached her breaking point after years of exhaustive work and disappointing personal relationships. She seeks to escape her life by subscribing to a new virtual dating service, which creates imaginary partners via artificial intelligence who match her every preference.

The simulation presents Mi-rae with multiple perfect boyfriends who court her using different methods to satisfy her emotional and fantasy-based needs. But the digital fantasy soon comes crashing down when duelling with the reality of Mi-rae's complex real-life connection with Park Kyeong-nam, her coworker.

As Kyeong-nam continues to challenge her illusion of a perfect fairy-tale love, Mi-rae begins to navigate both dimensions of her existence, which causes her to lose track of which feelings derive from real connections and which ones come from star-studded artificial relationships.

The series stars Kim Jisoo as Seo Mi-rae alongside Doom at Your Service's Seo In‑guk as Park Kyeong-nam, her rival webtoon producer who plays a key role in her real-world emotional journey. They are supported by Gong Min‑jeung, Kim Ah‑young, Park Hae‑rin, Ha Young, and Han Ga‑eul.

Meanwhile, several popular K-drama rookies and heavyweights from hits like S-Line, Hell is Other People, Alchemy of Souls, Prison Playbook, Cheese in the Trap, Bloodhounds, Extraordinary You, etc., namely, Lee Soo-hyuk, Lee Hyun-wook, Lee Jae-wook, Seo Kang-joon, Kim Sung-cheol, Lee Sang-yi, Ong Seong-wu, Kim Young-dae, Jay Park, and Yoo In-na make special appearances to elevate the drama's propensity for success to global standards.
