Below has set a new record as the biggest debut for a Canadian title on Netflix. A quiet coastal town and a restless ocean turned out to be a winning pairing. Viewers pressed play in huge numbers and then kept the tension going through every episode. What began as a ripple on the weekly charts quickly grew into a full wave, and the competition is still wiping off the spray.
Records sound big, so here is how many views Below earned and how the rest of the chart fared.

Below became the most-viewed debut ever for a Canadian title on Netflix, reeling in 17 million views from October 8 through Sunday, as per Netflix. The limited series follows a fisherman, played by Josh Hartnett, whose small Newfoundland hometown is terrorized by a mysterious sea creature. Jesse McKeown created the six-episode thriller. It took the top spot on the English TV list for the week of October 5 to 11.

Netflix reported that East of Eden finished second with 12.6 million views, nearly doubling the 6.5 million from its opening weekend. That earlier haul was the weakest first-place opening for the streamer since March. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 landed third with 4.1 million views, while Mojo Brookz: I Know You Lying took fourth with 3.3 million. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story claimed fifth place with 3 million.
While Netflix tallies the views, Hollywood keeps tallying Canadian stars, and the list reaches well beyond a single Newfoundland cast.
Canadian actors who keep ruling Hollywood beyond Below
Below carries Canadian talent of its own, featuring Vancouver-born Mackenzie Davis as marine biologist Fonda Howander, with Natasha Henstridge and Mary Walsh in the mix. Davis has a list of credits, including Halt and Catch Fire, Blade Runner 2049, and the Emmy-winning Black Mirror episode San Junipero. Fellow Vancouver native Ryan Reynolds has turned Deadpool into a box-office habit and added Aviation Gin and Mint Mobile to his empire.

London, Ontario native Ryan Gosling has earned Oscar nominations for La La Land and Barbie. Fellow London native Rachel McAdams went from Mean Girls to prestige drama with ease. Keanu Reeves keeps the John Wick and Matrix franchises running, Sandra Oh moved from Grey’s Anatomy to K****** Eve, and Seth Rogen built a comedy empire as an actor, writer, producer, and director. Canada has been sending talent south for years, and Below just proved the country can also keep a record-breaking debut for itself.
