Back to Hillman: Jada Pinkett Smith Confirmed for ‘A Different World’ Sequel at Netflix
In 2025, Netflix announced the sequel to the hit 1987 show A Different World, and brought back nostalgia for the good old television drama of the 80s. The original comedy first aired in 1987 as a The Cosby Show spin‑off and ran until 1993, eventually becoming a cultural touchstone for its portrayal of life at a historically Black college.
Borrowing from the original series, the Netflix sequel has already brought back Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) from the original series, where they will now play the parents of the lead character, Deborah Wayne. Now, the streamer has one more alumnus of the fictional HBCU Hillman College.
Jada Pinkett Smith will be back to reprise her role in the sequel as well.

A Different World sequel gets another gang member from the original cast
Jada Pinkett Smith has confirmed that she will be back as Lena James in the Netflix sequel series. In an Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon, Pinkett Smith hinted at her return by posting a photo of her trailer with the name of her A Different World character written on the door.
"She back #ADifferentWorld" read the caption of the photo.
In the original series, she joined the cast in Season 4 as Lena, a brash, chatty student from Baltimore who added a unique vibe to the fictional HBCU. Lena also got involved in subplots including her relationship with Hillman basketball player Dorian Heywood (Bumper Robinson) and her job at The Pit. Occasionally, her past followed her to university, including a memorable visit from her ex-boyfriend Piccolo, played by the late Tupac Shakur.
Jada Pinkett Smith's addition will make it easier for the fans of the original show to connect with its contemporary continuation better. The story will follow the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, Deborah Wayne, portrayed by Maleah Joi Moon in the new series. Deborah must navigate her parents' history while forging her own identity as she starts her freshman year at Hillman.
Still, there are many who have not seen the original series and are not familiar with the plot and characters.
A little bit about A Different World
At first, A Different World followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet's character from The Cosby Show) as she made her way through college. But the show changed its direction and revitalized itself after the first season, dropping off Bonet's character. The show then started focusing on other series regulars like Guy, Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman, Cory Tyler, Lou Myers, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, and Charnele Brown.

In addition to covering societal concerns that were hardly covered in popular sitcoms at the time - the series became pioneering for its candid and nuanced portrayal of Black college life. The sitcom left a lasting legacy in television by balancing humor, romance, and heart in addition to its socially conscious storytelling. The show was undoubtedly one of the best sitcoms of the time, making its revival all the more eagerly anticipated.
