The Boroughs is a show about the people in a retirement community who have to join forces and fight off an evil creature that threatens everyone they live with. This is a similar approach to the supernatural that has the same tone as Stranger Things. This led to theories that the two shows could quietly exist in the same universe. And now, in an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan for The Boroughs, Jeffrey Addiss has addressed whether these theories are true or not.
“Entirely separate worlds. I know there's some theories out there that we're a thing. We're not. Matt and Ross [Duffer] and all of them who make Stranger Things, that's Stranger Things. We're not playing in their playground. They have an awesome playground, but we're building over here,” Addiss said.
While Stranger Things and The Boroughs have a few surface-level similarities, the two stories are completely separate and not connected in any official way. Both shows follow groups of characters dealing with strange supernatural events, but the threats they face are very different. The world and creatures in The Boroughs have no real connection to the Upside Down or the Abyss from Stranger Things. Another major difference is scale, as Stranger Things mainly focuses on one small town, while The Boroughs explores events on a much larger, more global level. So even though the shows may feel similar in tone or structure, they do not.
Despite the similarities, The Boroughs is building its own unique supernatural world with a very different approach than Stranger Things.
What is the plot and the themes of The Boroughs?
The creators of Stranger Things, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, are executive producing a new supernatural series for Netflix called The Boroughs. The Boroughs plot focuses on a community of senior citizens living in a quiet retirement village who are suddenly facing odd supernatural phenomena. However, when strange things begin to happen that disrupt their peaceful lives, the unlikely group must come together to uncover the truth behind the terrifying phenomena.
“From the beginning, we knew we wanted The Boroughs to feel equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting, and emotional,” talking about the show, Addiss and Matthews told Tudum. “The challenge was to create a world that could hold all of these different tones at once. Which is why it was so fun to work with the Duffer Brothers — the masters of balancing heart and horror.”

The similarities to the supernatural initially sparked speculation, but Jeffrey Addiss has since clarified that The Boroughs and Stranger Things are two entirely separate stories. Indeed, the Duffer Brothers are involved, and there are common creative influences, but the upcoming Netflix series is set to create its own world with a new tone, setting, and characters.
