At the same moment that Michael was celebrating theatrical success, Netflix released Michael Jackson: The Verdict, a three-part documentary series examining the singer's 2005 child molestation trial and the allegations connected to Neverland Ranch. Directed by Nick Green, the series features attorneys, journalists, former associates, and people connected to the case while revisiting evidence, testimony, and controversies surrounding the trial that ultimately ended with Jackson being acquitted on all charges in 2005.

The documentary arrives in the long shadow of Leaving Neverland, Dan Reed's controversial 2019 documentary that earned a remarkable 98 percent critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, though audience reactions remained sharply divided with a 26 percent audience score. For many fans, that is where the frustration begins. Michael Jackson supporters have been calling for subscription cancellations and organizing boycotts. One viral post declared:

"Netflix canceled. Reason: Your opportunistic slandering of Michael Jackson. You come after Michael, you come after the billions who love him. No need for @netflix anymore. Good riddance. Goodbye." They argue that despite Jackson's acquittal, documentaries revisiting the allegations continue to shape public perception around accusations that were never proven in court.

The timing is what makes the situation especially striking. Antoine Fuqua's Michael arrived as a major commercial phenomenon, breaking opening weekend records for a music biopic and becoming one of the biggest biographical film successes ever. The film, led by Michael Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson, focused on the singer's rise from child prodigy to global superstar and generated renewed interest in his music catalog across generations.

Critics were divided on the film's approach, but audiences embraced it in massive numbers, helping turn it into a box office juggernaut. But now a digital revolt was almost inevitable.

Michael Jackson fans want to boycott Netflix

Across X, Michael Jackson supporters have been calling for subscription cancellations and organized boycotts. The message quickly attracted agreement from fellow fans, many of whom accused Netflix of exploiting controversy while ignoring the outcome of Jackson's trial. Similar reactions have surfaced across social media communities, with users encouraging others to avoid the platform and reject the documentary altogether.

Even after the documentary premiered, the backlash continued. Supporters argue that Jackson's legacy is being unfairly revisited while critics of the singer maintain that the allegations remain a matter of public interest. The divide shows no signs of disappearing.
