Christopher Nolan and his affinity for taking complex storylines and transforming them into a cinematic spectacle have made him one of the reasons why moviegoers still believe in the out-of-body theatrical experiences. But before all of this, he was just another ultra-low-budget indie director with a brilliant but hyper-specific talent for nonlinear storytelling and neo-noir aesthetics, primarily known for his debut film, Following in 1998.

This was the case until his 2000 classic was released, which changed the way stories were told forever. It is now releasing on Netflix this July.

The Christopher Nolan movie being talked about here is his 2000’s memory-twisting puzzle Memento, which is making its way to Netflix on July 5, 2026. The movie established Christopher Nolan as a trailblazer in the field of psychological storytelling. The film, which was based on his brother Jonathan Nolan's short story Memento Mori, was nothing short of extraordinary.

The narrative centers on Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), who has anterograde amnesia and uses images, tattoos, and notes to track down the person who killed his late wife. Once more, the film has a non-linear narrative structure with two distinct segments (colored/reverse order and black-and-white/chronological).

Netflix's decision to add Memento to its repertoire comes 25 years after the film's initial theatrical release in the United States. Despite having a budget of less than $10 million, it made over $40 million at the box office, making it a huge hit at the time. In addition, it gave Nolan a cult following and an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier director who continues to produce critically acclaimed blockbusters 25 years later.
