Apart from being a cat lover, there are plenty of other reasons to watch the new animated show, Alley Cats, on Netflix. Many viewers may have stumbled upon the adult animated comedy series while looking through the newest releases of August. It follows a group of feral British cats as they deal with chaos on the streets of London.
Writer and director Ricky Gervais has already expressed his immense love for the show and his hopes of continuing it for more seasons. But while watching foul-mouthed cats go about their daily lives is certainly a promising premise, there are several other elements that make Alley Cats more than just another show about cats.
Ricky Gervais wrote and directed Alley Cats
Alley Cats follows a group of feral cats, led by Gus, who spend their days sitting on a London row house, watching TV and criticizing humans. But their lives take an unexpected turn when they find a lost kitten and set out on a mission to help her find her way back home. Now, the entire show is written and directed by Ricky Gervais, who brings his signature style of comedy to the series.
Gervais is also the mastermind behind some of the hit sitcoms, including The Office, Derek, After Life, Extras, and more. He also voiced Gus in the show. Another reason not to miss the show is its storytelling approach.
Alley Cats offers laughter without losing its heart
The show perfectly blends emotional moments with dark comedy. Across its fast-paced, bite-sized episodes, the characters make unapologetically crude jokes. At the same time, the series makes room for heartwarming moments while shedding light on the frequent abandonment and mistreatment of animals.

Gus, who is voiced by Ricky Gervais, appears tough in the show. However, the cat is secretly concerned about abandoned cats, as seen with his affection for a lost kitten. There are often lengthy monologues about life and its meaning. So there is certainly something important to learn from the cats.
Alley Cats features a star-studded cast
The third fascinating aspect of the show is its star-studded voice cast. Along with Ricky Gervais voicing Gus, Tom Basden, Andrew Brooke, David Earl, Diane Morgan, Jo Hartley, and Kerry Godliman lend their voices to other cats in the series. So, Alley Cats became a much-needed reunion for Gervais and several members of his After Life team.

Gervais has previously worked with Godliman, Basden, and Brooke in After Life, while he and Earl worked together in Extras and Derek. And that makes the series especially nostalgic for longtime fans while promising something refreshing for new viewers. So, cat lovers and casual viewers alike might prefer to watch Ricky Gervais’ dark comedy Alley Cats, which is not just about cats but is surprisingly just as much about life.
