Netflix's latest true-crime documentary, A Toxic Love Story, revisits one of the most shocking cases of wrongful accusation in recent history. It tells the story of Michelle Hadley, who was dragged into an elaborate scheme built on lies, deception, and fabricated accusations by her ex-fiancé Ian Diaz and his then-wife Angela Diaz, which ultimately led to her spending time in prison. After finally receiving justice, Hadley has spoken openly about the trauma and emotional pain she suffered throughout the devastating experience. 

The case, along with Hadley's insights into what happened, is now chronicled in the Netflix documentary. But years after surviving this harrowing ordeal, where is Michelle Hadley now?

At the time of the incident, Michelle Hadley was pursuing her MBA at Chapman University. In the documentary, A Toxic Love Story, Hadley, who is now 39 years old, shared that she returned to school after the traumatic experience and focused on rebuilding her life. She started working and began dating again. 

She is now a mother to a daughter. And as she revealed in the documentary, she gave birth to her daughter on the same day Ian Diaz was convicted. This was a major turning point in her life. 

"Raising this beautiful little girl is my fairy tale ending," she said. "I think it is happily ever after. I'm not a princess, but I get to be the hero in my own story."

Following the incident, Hadley sued the City of Anaheim in 2017. She said the wrongful arrest and incarceration left her struggling with paranoia and anxiety. As per Courthouse News Service, the city reached a settlement with Hadley for an undisclosed amount much later in 2021.

"We are glad to see this case come to a close so all involved can move forward,” a city spokesperson said. 

While Hadley is cleared of all charges and can open up about her struggles, the shocking incident and how it happened still baffles people and raises several questions.

Michelle Hadley of Anaheim, California, met then-U.S. Marshal Ian Diaz on a dating app in 2013, and the two began dating. In June 2015, they got engaged and bought a condo together, with Hadley paying more than $14,000 as a down payment and the couple taking out a mortgage of under $460,000, as CBS News reported. 

However, after several problems continued between the two, Hadley broke up with Diaz and left the condo. But she was still involved in a dispute over the payments since she remained partially responsible for the mortgage. In 2016, Diaz married Angela, and later that May, Angela accused Hadley of sending her threatening emails, as per a news release from the Orange County District Attorney's Office. 

Angela also accused Hadley of impersonating her through inappropriate Craigslist ads that led several men to show up at her door. She further faked her pregnancy and cervical cancer. The accusations led to Hadley's first arrest on June 24, 2016, and she was released on $100,000 bail the following day. However, Hadley was arrested again and spent three months in prison. After the incident, Hadley claimed that she suffered abuse from inmates and guards. 

However, during the investigation, authorities discovered that the IP addresses linked to the threatening emails traced back to Angela and the condo, as per ABC7. Finally, in 2017, the charges against Hadley were dropped, and Angela was charged with 10 felony counts. Ian was also arrested in 2021 on federal charges of cyberstalking, conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, and perjury. While Michelle Hadley found justice, this case remains one of the most disturbing and shocking incidents in recent true crime history.
