Netflix has been giving animated films room to become full-blown musical events, with KPop Demon Hunters proving that an infectious soundtrack can travel far beyond the screen. BLACKPINK, meanwhile, has turned its global K-pop following into a cultural force, with Jennie establishing herself as a solo artist alongside the group's success.

Now, the streamer is bringing those two worlds together for a Cinderella story that trades a familiar fairy-tale formula for a fresh musical spin. The collaboration arrives at an interesting moment for Netflix Animation, which has seen how songs can become as memorable as the characters singing them.

With Steps preparing to turn the spotlight on Cinderella's often-misunderstood stepsisters, Jennie is adding a new musical chapter to the story.

Jennie leads the new musical lineup for Steps

Revealed on October 15, the soundtrack announcement for Steps accompanies the film's latest trailer, with Jennie recording the original song 'Someone to Hold' for the animated feature. The BLACKPINK star expressed excitement about joining the Steps family, describing the experience as her first song for an animated film.

"I love how much heart and personality the characters have, and I’m so happy I got to be a little part of their world," Jennie said.

"I hope you enjoy ‘Steps’ and ‘Someone to Hold’ as much as I do and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it," the singer added in a statement shared by Netflix.

The soundtrack announced in the trailer also features Rose Gray, EMEI and Amanda Seyfried, with four original songs written and produced by Grammy-nominated songwriter Justin Tranter (via The Hollywood Reporter). Rose Gray performs 'Meet Me on the Dance Floor', EMEI lends her voice to 'The Understudy', and Seyfried performs 'Smile and a Song'.

Tranter described Jennie's contribution as vintage-inspired dance pop, suggesting that 'Someone to Hold' will bring a lively, contemporary sound to the fairy-tale setting. The soundtrack and film both arrive on November 20.

The music is only one part of the appeal, however. Steps is also reworking the Cinderella story from a perspective that has rarely occupied center stage.

Steps turns Cinderella's fairy tale upside down

Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, Steps shifts attention towards Cinderella's stepsisters, Lilith and Margot, voiced by Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu, respectively. Amanda Seyfried voices Cinderella, while Bette Midler plays the Fairy Godmother.

Daniel Radcliffe, Nikki Glaser, Young Mazino and Peter Dinklage also feature in the voice cast. Rather than simply repeating the familiar story of a mistreated girl and her magical transformation, the film asks audiences to reconsider who deserves the fairy-tale spotlight.

The trailer hints at magical mishaps, unexpected transformations and a chaotic adventure after Lilith gets her hands on the Fairy Godmother's wand. One stepsister even turns into a frog, sending the characters into a scramble that departs from Cinderella's usual midnight dash. With the tagline 'At midnight, we ride', the film promises a playful adventure that explores sisterhood, belonging and the complicated line between good and evil.

The project is also a landmark for Netflix Animation Studios as its first fully in-house-produced feature film. With Jennie's new track joining a reimagined fairy tale, Steps could offer audiences a fresh blend of pop music, comedy and animated fantasy when it arrives this November.
