Remembering Patricia Routledge through her great body of work

Central to Patricia Routledge's legacy is her role as Hyacinth Bucket, a lady who believes she has risen socially and is eager to make sure everyone else regards her in that light. Starring alongside Clive Swift, Judy Cornwell, Geoffrey Hughes, and Josephine Tewson, Routledge's Keeping Up Appearances has become a perennially successful show in the history of British comedy. Her other notable films include To Sir, with Love (1967) and Don't Raise the Bridge, Lower the River (1968).

Dame Patricia Routledge, who also starred in Alan Bennett's TV monologues, won the 1968 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her Darling of the Day and the 1988 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Candide. Her crowning achievement is still Keeping Up Appearances, but she also excelled in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, a detective series in which she starred as the title sleuth. Routledge passed away on October 3, 2025, aged 96, leaving a radiant body of work behind. Although the exact cause of death was not reported in public, her agent verified that she passed away peacefully, bringing an end to an era.
