Stepping deeper into Netflix territory after Stranger Things, Maya Hawke has now officially boarded the streamer’s upcoming adaptation of Liz Moore’s 2024 bestselling mystery thriller The God of the Woods. Hawke is set to play Judy Luptack, a smart and quietly determined investigator who takes charge of the central case, while also carrying the weight of being the first female investigator in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s male-dominated field.

With Liz Moore co-steering the series alongside Mindhunter writer Liz Hannah, the adaptation is already shaping up as a darker, prestige-leaning turn for Hawke.

The world around Judy is expected to be packed with major names too, including Barbara Van Laar, Alice Van Laar, Peter Van Laar III, TJ Hewitt, Vic Hewitt, Louise Donnadieu, Tracy Jewell, Peter “Bear” Van Laar IV, and Judy’s mentor Denny Hayes, all of whom appear set to hold key places in the series’ sprawling mystery web.

Backed by a novel that held strong on The New York Times Best Sellers list across 2024 and 2025, the upcoming series is already arriving with heavyweight literary buzz.

So with Stranger Things star, Hawke, stepping into the investigation, what exactly is the dark mystery waiting at the centre of The God of the Woods?

What is The God of the Woods about?

At the heart of The God of the Woods lies the disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar, who vanishes from her family’s summer camp in the Adirondacks, cracking open a mystery that refuses to stay buried. As the story moves across multiple timelines and perspectives, the case begins echoing an older family disappearance from more than a decade earlier, pulling the Van Laar family into a deeper web of secrets, power, and long-shadowed truths.

With Judy Luptack stepping into that darkness, the adaptation looks set to follow a mystery that is far less about one vanishing and far more about everything that was already rotting underneath it.
