As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Proximity Media Television, founded by Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian, has signed a multi-year deal to develop exclusive series for Netflix. This significant corporate move occurred shortly after Proximity Media's previous overall television agreement with Disney expired. The founders expressed immense excitement about collaborating with the executive team to deliver these compelling new visions.
“As we continue to expand Proximity’s television business, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix, a company that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to distinctive creators and original storytelling,” the founders stated jointly. The production team aims to utilize the massive global reach of the streaming platform to highlight unique real-world narratives.
"We started Proximity Media with a simple goal: to tell event-driven stories that bring people in proximity with often overlooked subjects," the founders stated jointly to The Hollywood Reporter. Coogler secured an Academy Award for writing Sinners, which also earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Directing. This critical acclaim has solidified his status as one of the most reliable and inventive creators in the modern entertainment industry.
The new agreement marks a fresh chapter; several high-profile legacy projects remain under previous studio banners.
How the new agreement directly impacts existing Disney projects?
Disney is losing exclusive access to all future television series from Proximity Media, but the studio will retain ownership of multiple upcoming shows. Because the original 5-year agreement expired naturally, this transition does not trigger any legal issues or cancel pre-existing production commitments.
Additionally, Disney-owned networks will retain existing pipeline pilots that secured formal production orders before this new streaming transition. The highly anticipated reboot of The X-Files, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, will proceed at Hulu, with Coogler writing and directing the pilot. The live-action adaptation of Southern Bastards, starring Kevin Bacon, will similarly remain within the traditional Disney ecosystem.

Moving forward, any brand-new television concepts generated by the production banner will head straight to the Netflix platform. However, this exclusive streaming arrangement is strictly limited to television content and does not affect theatrical feature film development. This historic partnership ensures that the award-winning storytelling of Ryan Coogler will soon dominate the global Netflix television library.
