Netflix Execs Laugh Off Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Viral Claims From Joe Rogan’s Podcast

Netflix finally seemed to lay it all out after a headline-making comment from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and an Oscars joke. The two actors, whose film The Rip arrived on Netflix in early January 2026, suggested that the platform urges filmmakers to restate plot points, as many viewers watch on their phones. Unexpectedly, the comment made its way to the Academy Awards, where Sterling K. Brown and host Conan O’Brien joked about how Casablanca would look under such a rule.

Netflix, on the other hand, has now clarified that the whole joke might actually be just a joke, with a simple reaction.

Netflix has been keeping an eye on the current buzz, including the Oscars joke about plot repetition in films. And their film chief, Dan Lin, and his team reportedly found the joke hilarious, stressing that there is no such rule. This also means that Netflix has dismissed the comments made by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on The Joe Rogan Experience regarding the claim.

“We actually all laughed when we watched that bit at the Oscars, but there’s no such principle,” Lin told the reporters at the Netflix press conference.

“I mean, if you watch our movies or TV shows, we don’t repeat our plot. So I don’t know where that comment came from. Certainly, we are focused on making great movies.”

Executive Jinny Howe even joked that chief content officer Bela Bajaria dislikes over-explaining. And they further added that Netflix trusts its audiences to be smart and attentive. Bajaria also pushed back strongly, saying it is not correct to assume Netflix would force such notes or that filmmakers would blindly follow them.

What Exactly Is InterPositive? Is It Going To Make AI Movies for Netflix? Ben Affleck’s Creative Vision Explained

Soon after addressing one of the viral rumors of this year, Netflix executives also spoke about purchasing InterPositive, founded by Affleck.

Netflix executives addressed the reasons behind InterPositive purchase

As reported by Bloomberg, InterPositive is an AI moviemaking company founded by Ben Affleck. And Netflix has reportedly paid nearly $600 million to acquire it. During the press conference, executives addressed the purpose behind such a major purchase.

“We have always said we want to make sure that we have the best tools if filmmakers want them. Some don’t want them; they don’t have to use them. But the ones that do, if we had a tool that was actually created by a filmmaker and very practical, I think that’s sort of the most exciting thing about it,” the executives collectively said.

They also praised Ben Affleck’s vision for the company, which focuses on building tools to help filmmakers create movies more efficiently. The deal is being seen as one of the biggest moves by Netflix, and how this turns out is something to look forward to in the future. As of now, rest assured, Netflix is not asking the creators to reexplain plot points in movies.
