Matthew Perry’s death in October 2023 sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, leaving Friends fans grieving the actor who had made Chandler Bing a television icon. For Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer, the loss was deeply personal after a decade spent building one of television’s most beloved ensembles.

Now, Netflix’s The One About Matthew Perry is offering a more intimate glimpse into their private grief and the struggles Perry faced away from the cameras. For millions, Chandler’s sarcastic one-liners remain part of television history. Behind those familiar punchlines, however, was a man whose life involved years of addiction, attempts at recovery, and a willingness to speak publicly about his difficulties.

How the Friends cast came together to say goodbye to Matthew Perry

In Netflix’s three-part documentary, The One About Matthew Perry, which premiered on October 27, Matthew Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, recalls the private funeral that brought the actor’s family and his former co-stars together. In the third and final part of the documentary, Bowick describes a small gathering of close friends and relatives, where the five surviving Friends cast members arrived together to pay their final respects.

“At the funeral, we arranged for just the family to have it be open casket for a little while for all of us. The funeral was very small — close friends and family,” Bowick recalled.

“And then, all five of them walked up to the casket holding hands and stood around him, crying,” she said.

The recollection brings a poignant dimension to the bond that audiences watched develop across 10 seasons of Friends. On screen, the six characters repeatedly turned to one another during heartbreak and uncertainty. At Perry’s funeral, the familiar ensemble was no longer performing a scene. They were colleagues and friends confronting the absence of someone who had shared a defining chapter of their lives.

But the grief surrounding Perry’s final farewell was only one part of a much longer story. Away from the warmth of the Friends ensemble, the actor had been fighting a deeply personal battle with addiction.

Matthew Perry’s addiction battle behind the Friends fame

The documentary also revisits the professional disruption caused by Matthew Perry’s struggles with addiction, revealing how the actor’s personal battles could reach the set of the sitcom that made him famous. Roger Costillo, one of Perry’s closest friends, recalls that production on Friends paused in 2001 while the actor started rehabilitation.

“They had to shut down production for a while until Matt worked out what he had going on,” Costillo says in the series.

Perry himself had previously been candid about how his addiction affected his appearance throughout the show’s run. In his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, he explained that viewers could trace his struggles by looking at his changing weight and appearance from season to season.

“When I’m carrying weight, it’s alcohol; when I’m skinny, it’s pills. When I have a goatee, it’s lots of pills,” he had written.

That openness remains an important part of Perry’s legacy. Rather than presenting his struggles as a footnote to his fame, The One About Matthew Perry examines the painful reality behind the laughter and the efforts he made to pursue recovery.
