As sources spoke to Variety, major entertainment industry giants Focus Features, Warner Bros.’ Clockwork, A24, and Netflix have all officially declined to acquire Artificial. However, the nearly finished drama focusing on Sam Altman still maintains interest from alternative specialty distributors.
Recent screenings have generated active pursuit from independent studio Mubi, while prominent distributor Neon is also carefully considering the project. The creative agency representing the director has been conducting private screenings to secure a fresh theatrical distributor for the film. The production boasts a substantial 40-million-dollar budget and stars acclaimed actor Andrew Garfield as the controversial tech executive.
Amazon MGM originally developed the picture but chose to walk away entirely before its scheduled release window. This corporate retreat occurred shortly after the parent company finalized a massive 50-billion-dollar cloud computing investment with OpenAI. The studio publicly stated that the provocative subject matter did not influence their decision to abandon the project, as reported by Variety.
The sudden cancellation forces the filmmakers to explore alternative release strategies with independent distribution partners who specialize in risky cinema.
Mubi emerges as potential savior for Artificial
According to the same Variety report, independent film distributor Mubi appears to be an ideal partner due to an extensive existing relationship with the director. The organization previously managed international distribution for multiple prior projects by Luca Guadagnino, including his recent literary adaptation, Queer.
The distributor previously saved an acclaimed thriller titled The Substance after a major studio dropped it right before a major festival. That specific gamble paid off tremendously, resulting in multiple major award nominations and significant critical praise worldwide. While Artificial represents a larger financial hazard due to higher costs, it possesses similar potential to become a major awards contender.

The narrative heavily features actor Yura Borisov as an idealistic co-founder alongside an ensemble cast. The widespread rejection of Artificial by multiple major film studios highlights the intense corporate anxiety surrounding the depiction of powerful modern technology leaders. Ultimately, the reluctance of mainstream distributors to touch the project proves that the real-life boardroom politics of the tech world are just as dramatic as the story unfolding on the screen.
